Vaseline(petroleum jelly) works get, I also tape the edges in place,
However to removing it can be a chore!
The first thing I do is
fill the tank with hot water (heat will soften the Vaseline)
Add more Vaseline to bare spots and re-install
Older(reused) backgrounds are more brittle, so I use a 2-3 inch window squeegee (piece of softer rubber)
Too remove all the Vaseline, while it is soft from the heat wipe with paper towels(rags will do)
Then spray an ‘orange degreaser’ (home depot brand works best ‘ZEP’) and let it sit 20 to 30 minutes
Then wipe and clean, Repeat if needed
Finally I rinse and re-rinse the inside and outside of the tank
