Finished projects?

Postby jimpunker » Sun Aug 28, 2011 6:29 pm

Hi guys, have been reading through all these awesome ideas but I'm yet to see any of them in real completion.

So, I thought I would make a thread here where pictures of finished DIY projects could be posted. Some of the ideas just sound amazing!

Most of them are pipe dreams Jim; I was going to build an indoor pond but that's gone on the back burner for the foreseeable future. I have instead moved some tanks around to make more room. Don't get me wrong, I still have it in mind to do the pond.

My pipe dream came true. I have a running stream in my garden.

Now I did this when I knew nothing about keeping fish or aquatic plants so it's so low tech that I'm surprised everything didn't die. However I think the fact that it's outside probably helps. I need to add filtration to it when I can afford to improve the water quality, the fish that are in it seem pretty happy though and the only deaths we've had have been cat related. We mainly have goldfish in there, shubunkin and comets but there are a few sticklebacks and some fish that are similar to barabits (My Dad bought them and I wasn't involved in the choice so have no idea what they are lol)

We have the usual kind of plants you'd have, lillys and reeds but we have some random weeds growing in there which grew so tall and fast that we kept them because they looked really nice and the large amount of roots they sprout obviously not only help filter the water but also give the fish a nice place to hide.

So there you go guys, proof pipe dreams can come true!

Thanks Mick, was a lot of hard work but it was so worth it. Have spent most of the sunny days we've had sat next to it listening to the running water and trying to figure out what to do next. It was in fact the reason I wanted to start keeping fish.

What a beautiful finished product :thu: My husband and I purchased a senegal bichir about a month ago and have been thinking about making a chinese water garden in the back yard for him. It'll be a long time before we get it going, but your pics have me wanting to do it sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the kind words :-)

You should totally get on that project! Strange as this sounds working the ground outside is best in the winter months from what I've learnt. It allows for the soil in sink into place properly. Or at least that's what I found.
