I will give it a try and go from there when I have my tank set up.

Hopefully I will get the depth from 2x54w T5 as it will have to travel down nearly 40" to the bottom of my tank

Go for white LED's, something about 7500K will look nice, pretty natural colour too.

Personally I prefer bulbs in the 7500-10000K range, but go for what you like, you can get good quality tubes at low prices from http://www.lampspecs.co.uk, the likes of Arcadia, Hagen and Fluval praise the idea of tubes with peaks in the red and blue zones as it promotes better plant growth, any benefit is negligable, so go for what you find to be best.

There's a good piece by James Marshall on T5 lighting here, giving you an idea of which colour temperatures look good together:

Yes I have read though James Marshall webpage the other day and I like the look of the Philips de Luxe Pro 965 I have been in touch with a company I normally use and they can get them for me for cheaper.

I was thinking of using the 956 T5 and getting 5500k leds as that all I could seem to get with the mr-11 fitting.

OK, 5500 is a little yellow, but should be balanced nicely by the 956 T5's.
