Ross T's Tank's.....

Postby rosst » Fri Mar 20, 2009 4:04 pm

** Firstly, I have never made a journal online before, but thought I would try to share my experiences, Various Tank Pics & Video's and give a little bit of commentary as they are uploaded and progress.....

Background....influences on becoming a Fish-keeper... :

...Well, after thinking about how come I have ended up with 5 Tanks in my house and 2 at my Friend's (storing them as a favour) and how I have recently started a Local Small Business in Providing Aquariums / Maintaining them for Care-Homes, Schools, Dentist's etc..., I came to the conclusion that it's all down to my older Cousin, Michael(!). - He was the one with a magnificent 5 footer in his Bedroom when I was 10 yrs old. - which housed a Beautiful 14" Oscar, 6"Blue Acara, + 5" Firemouth, along with a 12" Plec, a Striped Talking / 'Humbug' Catfish and some Breeding Rainbow Cichlids in another 3 foot Tank.......I was fascinated and always asked my Aunty to go up and see them - even being allowed to 'hand-feed' them with massive Doromin Sticks as a special treat! - both for them and me.

Click on the following for an idea of his Look;.... *Note* - once Youtube is opened, then click on '<' Arrow at top left to return to this Page....thanks.

> They were similar to these, although its too hard to describe / justify / fairly represent the Jaw-dropping Presence of his Oscar...just wish I'd had a Video Camera back then!.....;

*Note* - these 3 Pics. are not my fish now, but I have permission to use as examples of the Fish that I used to keep a few years back.....

....I lived opposite a small pet shop and ended up getting 2 Shubumkin's as my first ever Pet/Fish....I called them 'Bob' and 'Sparky' - they lasted quite a while and got me the basics taught at an early age..........a year later I had persuaded the parents to get 30" Set-up with Tropical communal fish from a local Garden centre;... This tank was still up and running 16 yrs. later, although it eventually started to give way in the top corner last month -.....anyway, I had Tetras (SilverTip, Glowlight..+ Livebearers and a very intolerant Male, Three-Spot Gourami - which became the bane of my life for 12 years! - he bullied any other largish fish, battered his ' wife/girlfriends', - but I grew to like him......

....After a few years with the usual 'Communal' Species, I decided to try and emulate my Cousin's Set-up and bought another Tank (3 foot) which I kept some Central+South - American Cichlids in for a good while; Firemouths, Blue Acara, Juwels and Rainbow Cichlids - which were donated from my Cousin's off-spring. ...Ironically he has recently asked for some of my Offspring of my Rainbow's to put in his re-invigorated Set-up.......ha-ha.

>> I was catching the 'Fish bug' rapidly by about 16yrs. old, and used to love watching them Battle for the juicy, nutritous Earthworms that we used to dig up every week out of the garden....
... I finally chose (unwisely, in hindsight) that I would finally get an OSCAR - I could not resist the small Tiger-patterned colours - and I did know how big they could get, after many years of watching my cousin's Specimen: > He soon out-grew my 3 footer, so I upgraded (twice) and had a wonderful Oscar which grew to about 13" and he was very entertaining.....he unfortunately passed on about 2 yrs. ago, after the dreaded 'HITH' hole in the head Disease. - too much Bloodworm could have been the cause, I believe.

>> Since then, I have used that same Tank to grow and Breed Angelfish - which I have thoroughly enjoyed and have good feedback from the Local 'customers' - the young are fed on Live Baby Brineshrimp and have lots of space / water changes.

and; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gK-MH-ZTghg
and also; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKeVDvlMHbA

.....I now also have breeding Rainbow Cichlids, Lyretail Swordtails, Platies, Guppies etc....and take pride in ensuring they are good-quality Fish. - constantly swapping the pregnant ones around and helping them to have a good survival rate, but its impossible to save all of them...

..... We also decided a couple of months ago, to go ahead with a 'Show-tank, Display' for the Living Room, with Some Quality Discus in the Juwel 180, Vision set-up....they are settling in well and I have Rummy-Noses and Cories in as their ideal Tankmates.

Juwel Vision 180, Bow-front Tank;

...This is in an (almost) perfect alcove space in our Living Room Lounge area - It has housed a general Community, Angelfish Spawning and now has the afore-mentioned; Discus, along with Rummy-Nose Tetra Shoal and Cories happily settling in together. I have removed the Straight Vallis Plants, as they were unsuitable for keeping the substrate clean for the Discus, as I went for a minimalist Decor plan (just sand at the sides, with Bogwood and a couple of easily removable Plants in for now)

It fits nicely in one of the Alcoves (40") with the tank measuring 36" .....Be tough to get the wallpaper changed though!?!

Currently is home to these;.....

Upstairs Tank (s)......;

>> My 48" tank has been home to a few different fish through the years, - mainly with my OSCAR in (+ Golden Severums, Talking Catfish and a Large Gibbicep Plec).....I have also had a period with Red-Tail Tinfoil Barbs, Spawning Angels and Also used for Young Angels / Swordtails and Gold BN Plec's......It is currently home to my Adult Angels, a couple of their off-spring which I wanted to keep and see how they develop, + 2 Medium-sized Clown Loaches, 1 Plec, 4 Rainbow Cichlids and 1 GlassCatfish - which is soon to be sold, as I moved on the other 5, recently.

My big tank now has a small breeder for my Fry to grow in safety at either side ; currently with Rainbow Cichlid Young to the right, with Swordtails/Guppy Fry to the left.......constant stream of these as I have a few Mothers pregnant most of the time.

My Angelfish Young are v.quick growers and they mainly look like this at about 4 or 5 weeks.....

Then after 2 months, similar to this;

My Lyre-tail Swordtails look like the following;

....I have added a couple of small Bristlenose Plecs (Albino and Normal) to the tanks recently, to control any Algae on the decor/glass. Great little things they are too!. ...

As the youngsters develop and grow, I'll try to capture an image at each stage of development - they seem to be quick growers and have Colouration/ Fin development very early.

Decided to get another Discus ordered - a 'Super Red Melon' (as advertised) - however the colour is not as I intended (all Red with a Yellow Face) - But I do really like this guy/girl.............He/She is sticking up for herself straight away, and I hope that the Balance of the Group will disperse any Harrassing by the Bigger Blue Diamond....
