My 96ltr tank

Hi guys

Some of you may have read on here already that I'm re doing my tank from scratch. The tank has been stripped, cleaned and sterilized, along with filter housing, rocks, ornaments etc. New filter media has been put in along with new substrate, and also a new higher output heater as the old was struggling to keep the temps up.

The idea was to plant the tank with some live plants to add some colour and scenery, but when I popped to local p@h today, all the plants were covered in snails which put me off them. I had live plants before and they came with snails and took over the tank. I may look at plants again another time, but I'll do with out for now.

Anyway, I've put everything in the tank and added some flakes (thats what you can see floating in the tank pic) and now its been turned on and left to start the cycling process. We go away for 11 days on Tuesday, so house sitter will be feeding the tank for me until I get back, then I'll start doing water testing to see where its at.

Here's a pic of it currently.

think I'm going with neon tetra's, cherry barbs, and some corydoras, and maybe a few guppies.

Cant wait to get some fish in there now !

What lovely stones! Are they attached with silicon? The log "caves" are smashing too.

No, stones are just 'stacked' on each other.

Nice layout, make sure the stones are secure.

I would be tempted to stick those rocks together using either marine putty or fish grade silicon. Looks lovely you might be better using pure ammonia rather than fish food though for your cycle, rotting food can cause some issues of its own.

A friend has given me some liquid ammonia today, so while out I popped to p@h and got the API master test kit, and tested the water, then added some ammonia, left for 20mins and tested again, and repeated until it got to 4ppm. I've left instructions with house sitter on how much ammonia to add to the tank once a day.

Back in 2 weeks :)

Well, tank has been getting daily feed of liquid ammonia, have been testing the waters last couple of days, using API freshwater Master Test Kit. When I do the Nitrate test, I put water in the test tube, and add the chemical drops, it immediatly goes to high Nitrates level, but then after couple mins of settling, it drops to 0ppm. I was kinda hoping by now to see some Nitrates in the tank indicating the cycling is well in progress, but sadly guess not :(

Patience is the key :-):

It'll be worth the wait when it is cycled

Well, I decided I didn't like the stones the way they were, so got some plants from an Internet company, they arrived and were fitted yesterday. Still not a 100% sure yet, but its growing on me now. I know its not full of water, I removed some water while adding the plants, and then took the pic. Some good news too, the tank has cycled fully now :) so buying some fishes soon....maybe this afternoon if I get chance.

Remember the key to healthy plant growth is feeding them - especially important in a new tank.
