I took a water sample to my LFS today and had it checked. There is no iron or copper present so things should start improving.

Are you swapping to a fertiliser without the copper and iron now?

No. I'm either not going with the ferts at all, or only once a week when I change the water. I will keep a watch on the plants & shrimp. If the plants look OK & the shrimp don't seem to mind then I'll add the iron. I think it depends on how things go.

You can get liquid fertilisers that dont contain heavy metals. I cant remember the name of the one I used but it did great and was safe for the shrimp.

Plants are starting to establish quite well now. It took a while, but they all seem to have anchored into the ceramic media. There is no soil or gravel at all. I'm trying a feeding block for when I go on holiday. You can see it on the slate ornament by the bubble tube. It's been in a week now. If it lasts the fortnight without any mishaps I will get another.

Finished my holiday trial today. Apart from the front of the tank being covered in green algae everything was OK. I'll feel happier when I go on holiday now. Just got to buy a new feeding block.

Yes. I didn't loose any fish. I wasn't sure if the cardinals would cope without water changes. I've got a week in Scotland & 2 weeks in Crete.
