Changing

Postby Big Den » Wed Feb 22, 2012 8:01 pm

I bit the bullet and sold my pair of synspilum and the 15" jaguar cichlid. They have gone to a good home, so now I am thinking of having a change. I still have a few more fish to shift and then I may get into a Amazon set up with a few shoals of tetras. Its a 150 gallon so I have plenty of scope. I was also contemplating growing some plants above the tank, enclosed for the humidity with polycarbonate sheeting, so that the roots trailed into the tank. Its all in my head at the moment but watch this space. :ok:

I've come to a point now Candise where I have to be strict with my fish keeping. I have too many tanks and it's costing a fortune to run them. I want to thin down and concentrate on just 5 tanks, I have 11 at the moment so quite costly to run. I have wanted to make a bigger and better paludarium for a while now, I was going to build a pond in the garage and incorporate it into that, but this is a much better option. I didn't like parting with the jag but I couldn't move on while he was in the tank. When I netted him out he was huge and heavy, I was amazed at just how big he is. The guy that collected him and the pair of synspilum has a 150 gallon tank set up for them so they should do well.

Congrats on finding someone suitable to take them. I've been trying to give away one of my Jags for over a month and have had no luck. I know it must have been hard to see them go. Those Synspilum were just stunning.

As much as I hate to say it keeping smaller fish gives you more options regarding planting and having a nice looking tank. I'm also in the frame of mind now after keeping discus for so long I wouldn't do so again... they are lovely fish, but it's all about the fish. Tetra's and cory's look stunning in large shoals and you can concentrate on planting. I love Amazon based tanks and with that big tank you'll have plenty of options Den. I look forward to seeing it progress, have fun :-):

The next job is to get rid of 2 x 16" common plecs and a 12" sailfin, they will probably end up at the lfs for some credit.

I agree with Anita it is so much easier to keep smaller fish and some do look stunning in shoals but larger fish are also nice to keep but have a lot more maintanence and lots of them don't really like plants, there are only a few plants that you can keep with the larger cichlids so if your wanting to focus on planting you cant really. If you do some shoaling fish I wouldnt suggest neon tetras as so many of them are bred they arent very hardy
When in doubt get another tank.
I keep water the fish are just for decoration.

Yes Anita, Maidenhead Aquatics, won't get a lot for them though.
