Two platys fighting

I need some advice about my platy who is being picked on by the other platy.
I bought a red platy on Sunday which the shop said was male. My existing platy which I'm not sure is male or female is constantly attacking the new red one.

Any advise before I take it back at the weekend?

If they are both male then the original one will be dominant and show this fact to the newcomer. To tell the difference between male and female look at the anal fin, the fin at the bottom close to the tail, in males this fin is modified and stick like, in females it is normal, fan shaped.

I think they are both male.
Should I take the newby back do you think?
If I swapped for a female would that be better?

I can't fit anymore in the tank otherwise I'd get another one so I had 3

The trouble is if you swop for a female the male will chase her all the time. With livebearers it's always best to have 3 females to 1 male, spreads the love evenly. :-)

As Den said if you are planning on swapping it for a female then get 3 rather than just the one. They breed readily so don't try to save the babies as harsh as it sounds or you will soon get over run, just have one corner of the tank heavily planted so the babies can hide and you will get some who make it to adulthood.
