Bought my first oddball 2 days ago, a decent sized African Butterfly Fish! Need advice regarding feeding, it ate a cricket yesterday, possibly its first ever, today its happy to just play with one. How often will it, or should it take live foods?

Its currently about 3", has fin issues, was only fed flakes in the shop too. Think "it" is female, but hard to tell for definate at the minute, but it had some lovely dark stripes come out on its dorsal area.

I am not really much use to you with regards to butterfly fish having never kept them myself but if she has been raised eating flake foods then its hard to tell how often she will eat the crickets, try her again in a day or two and see how she goes.

Thats what i was thinking tbh, bit sad i have to ween it back to its own ways! The instinct is still there though, not interested in dead food.

I had been reading up on them last week, and chance found this one, just surface floating, ripped fins, and when i went back, they said they only feed flakes, had no idea which fish from name, or that it was predatory! Bit of a pity buy to be honest.

Make sure you have a tight fitting lid and watch it when your doing water changes as they are prone to jumping out the tank.

What size tank do you have her in and what else is in the tank?
