Discus

Postby Katfish » Wed Apr 18, 2012 12:23 pm

I went to 2 of my local shops yesterday and they both have in stock Discus that have been raised on tap water and are more torrent to water conditions than the RO water discus.

I told told both store mangers my stock list of fish and the flow rate in my tank due to it having a sump.

The flow rate of my tank is 3500 sump return but more like 3000ltr due to hight which I have deflected the return along the back wall of the tank I also have 2 x 3200ltr wave makes which are aimed at the middle.

In my tank I have quite a few low flow spots

Both Store managers said my tank would be great for there Discus.

Both stores are ones I use all the time and have never given me bad advice yet or tried to make a sale just to make money and one of them gives me a 7 day return policy too and that even covers death.

Should I go for it and get a pair and try them out and then increase to 6-8 in the future ?

I will leave it to Mick or Anita to advise you move on this as I haven't kept discus all I do know is they are a lot of work, require soft water and daily water changes.

Thats the thing theses have been raised on tap water and only require 2 x 30% wc a week when juvenile and only 1 30-50% wc when adult.

Both shops told me the same thing.

Discus should not be kept in pairs, they are a shoaling fish and should always be kept in groups of at least 6. If you can allow at least 10 gallons of water for each Discus and the tank has been running for a few months then they can be considered.

I think he has the 10 gallons per fish covered, if he understocks the tank would he still need the daily 10% water change.
When in doubt get another tank.
I keep water the fish are just for decoration.

varying opinions on that subject, I always stuck to daily water changes for my piece of mind as well as caring for the Discus

I would say that tank needs to mature a bit first. I think the old rule of thumb was at least 6 months. Anita makes a very good point about that CO2, Discus thrive on consistency.

As Mick points out, definitely in groups. Although they aren't the typical cichlid they are very capable of aggression and are masters at stressing out the weak link. With just two you are almost guaranteed to have one go dark and end up cornered.

As for the water, I don't know anybody who keeps Discus that isn't a slave to water changes no matter what they were raised on. Partially just because of their diet. Their diet consists of a lot of foods that foul the water quite easily if not completely consumed.

High protein all the way, don't forget you also need to run the tank to a temp of at least 28 deg C
